CSA Newsletter: Week 4

Happy Solstice!!!  The long weekend days of solstice have left us feeling energized as we head into the official calendar summer.  As always, a lot has been happening on the farm: for those of you who pick up your share on the Farm, you’ll see a new movable hoop house in the field!  It’s the first of three that we’ll put up this summer, and the tomatoes and basil inside will love the extra heat the plastic creates.  Come fall, we’ll move the hoop house over hardy winter greens to overwinter and put in our Winter CSA.   Thank you to all our volunteers (including Edge’s Dad, who was up here on a short “vacation”!) who made this hoop house happen!

A new round of seeding is set to begin for successions of salad mix, lettuce heads, summer herbs and late season brassicas.  Along with that comes lots of bed-prep: taking out the old crops to make way for the new!  And speaking of new, the peas are flowering!  We’re keeping watch of all the crops getting ready to be harvested in the next few weeks: peas, carrots, beets, zucchini and summer squash…even the tomatoes have put out their first flowers!  Oh the summer bounty…

We’re getting closer to that height of production each week, and we’re excited about the new crops coming out of the field this week, including kohlrabi and fennel.  As always, please ask us for recipes and ways to use these vegetables when you pick up your share!  See you this week!

~Katie and Edge
