CSA Pick-up 7/18 & 7/21

Today is the deadline to sign up for Cooking Your Share.  Register here.

Whew, it was quite the storm that rolled over us just as the CSA pick-up began yesterday!  While the rain is always welcome, the intensity of the thunder and lightning sure did send us running inside very fast!  We heard reports of downed trees along rte. 12 and hope you all spent the storm safely inside.

The rain really was welcome, though!  We’ve been seeing in our fields and hearing from other farmers in the area the effects of a hot and dry early season: slower growth and certain stressed crops.  With irrigation, we’ve been able to stem some of the stress, though we don’t have irrigation on every bed.  Aside from heat stress, the cucumbers and zucchini were hit hard by cucumber beetles, and have just begun to bounce back in the last week or so, but you’ve likely noticed the imperfections on the cukes as a result of the beetles.  Upon some taste tests, we decided they were still very much worth giving out despite the blemishes, and we hope you agree!

Some new crops are coming into harvest time: tomatoes and peppers are just beginning to ripen and we have enough to harvest them both as a choice for the CSA this coming week.  Carrots will also be coming out of the field this week, and the first green onions with them.  And once we reach the tomato tipping point, we’ll be rolling in them!  As always, we do our best to give you the most accurate harvest list, but from time to time Monday and Thursday will be slightly different based on what’s ready.

Here’s the harvest list for this coming week:

  • Choice of peppers or tomatoes
  • Onions
  • Cucumbers
  • Zucchini
  • Mesclun mix
  • Carrots
  • Herbs: 2 bunches, parsley, cilantro, basil

In the Farm Stand this Friday and Saturday 3:30-6:30:

  • Mesclun Mix
  • Lettuce Heads
  • Cucumbers
  • Bunching Onions
  • Beets
